Principal's Corner

A Message from our Principal

Welcome, Thunderbolt Families!

The beginning of the year is always exciting as we welcome new faces and renew connections with our 8th grade students and families. We are ready for an exciting year supporting our students as they navigate the waters between elementary and high school. Our goal is to provide rigorous academics with support in place for students who need intervention or enrichment. We also strive to provide a positive environment where all students feel safe.

Brain research tells us the highest level of learning takes place when classrooms and schools are motivating, positive and engaging. When stress levels decrease, learning increases. To create a positive and engaging environment, we implement school wide Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) and a process called Capturing Kids’ Hearts.

Thunderbolt PBIS provides students with the opportunity to celebrate positive choices. We teach students the expectations in all areas of the building and we recognize them when they do the right thing. A “thank you” signature on a bingo board just may result in something fun like a free dress day. Our Battle of the Grades allows each grade to earn points for celebrations like fewest tardies or discipline referrals. This fun competition culminates each quarter as the winning grade earns the highly sought after seats in the bleachers for that quarter’s assembly. Our goal with PBIS is to ensure we are watching for our students doing the right thing and recognizing their efforts. We all appreciate being recognized for doing good things!

We are honored to have been selected as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School by the Flippen Group for the third consecutive year. This award is a result of the commitment of Thunderbolt staff to implement the positive Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes in every classroom to maximize learning for every student. Students learn leadership skills in every classroom as they master academic content. Our goal is to send students to Lake Havasu High School with the leadership skills that will optimize their high school experience and prepare them for life in the “real” world.

I hope every student selects an opportunity to be involved in a club, sport or band/choir during their brief two years at Thunderbolt. Middle school is the perfect opportunity for students to begin to identify what brings them joy. Students who are “plugged in” care about their school and bring their very best every day.

Finally, to maintain a positive environment, it is important for students and families to understand our expectations. This is critical to keep everyone safe. Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to review our handbook on our school website.

My goal is to support our students through a partnership with families. Stay up to date on Thunderbolt events through our monthly newsletter, our Facebook page, Instagram account, and our text and email communications.
Please contact me directly should you have questions or concerns so we can work together toward the best solution for your child.

It is truly an honor to serve our students every day.
